Anti-Fat Drug...For Dogs?

In surprising health news, it seems Fido gets to join the ranks of Richard Simmons and Jenny Craig. Fortunately, Paris Hilton clones aren't putting dogs in leotards and mini-afro wigs, at least we think. Rather, it seems there is now an anti-fat, diet-drug for dogs. What?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new Pfizer drug, Slentrol, to help manage the weight of obese dogs.

Overweight pets are more prone to develop conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, thus the FDA and Pfizer both agree that medical intervention could be a nice preventative measure.

There is nothing wrong with that in itself, it's good to help our pets.

The concern, and question that should be asked is, are we going to let our pets live the McDonald's today, Slim-fast tomorrow lifestyle?

The mechanism by which the drug Slentrol operates is not completely understood, according to the FDA. Despite this, the fat-absorption buster will be released to 5 percent of U.S. dogs that are 20 percent overweight. Vets are to monitor the drugs effects and adjust dosage accordingly.

Some dogs are clearly bound to be overweight. It's a matter of genetics at times. But with so many Americans overweight, one has to wonder how many actually take the time to exercise with their pets?

In the march of medicine to overcome our lifestyle choices, let's not reduce our pets to being pharmacy-junkies. Instead let's share the ancient, tried and true, values of smart-choices, proper diet, exercise and fun.

When a dog is that much over weight a pill doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Then again what are people doing to get their dogs so fat?

I think its rather sad that people and their pets are so obese and lazy that they resort to a pill as opposed to playing with fido

Obesity is a major problem with dogs and different means should be found out to check it
